Weill Cornell Medicine announced that Bernhard Kühn, MD, has been appointed Chief of the Division of Cardiology in the Department of Pediatrics at the university and NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital. Dr. Kühn was also appointed Professor of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine and Co-Director of the NewYork-Presbyterian Children’s Heart Center. In his new roles, he will work to boost the institutions’ clinical care, education, and research offerings; mentor the next generation of pediatric cardiovascular specialists; explore new strategies in myocardial growth and regeneration; and develop novel therapeutics to improve cardiac outcomes in pediatric patients. Dr. Kühn also hopes to foster multidisciplinary collaboration to investigate new approaches to overcome challenges in heart regeneration among pediatric patients with congenital heart disease. Dr. Kühn previously served as Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine as well as Director of the Pediatric Institute for Heart Regeneration and Therapeutics and Associate Director of the Richard King Mellon Foundation Institute for Pediatric Research at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh—where he established himself as an internationally renowned physician-scientist and expert on cardiomyocytes and heart regeneration. “Our research is directed at understanding the mechanisms that restrict regeneration of an appropriate number of [cardiomyocytes]. When we understand the barriers, we can treat patients … so they are better equipped to lead a meaningful life,” concluded Dr. Kühn. |
