A meta-analysis of 24 studies involving 6,800 patients found that about one-third of those with end-stage lung disease had sarcopenia. Prevalence was higher in men, older adults, and patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Rates varied by diagnostic criteria and measurement tools. Lead researcher Li Sheng, PhD, of Zhejiang University, noted that chronic hypoxemia and systemic inflammation contribute to muscle loss. The researchers emphasized the need for standardized diagnostic criteria and prospective studies to improve management.
