Findings from a 20-year retrospective cohort study revealed that prevalence and incidence of diabetic retinal disease (DRD) among U.S. patients with diabetes mellitus have doubled, while the incidence rates of vision-threatening DRD such as diabetic macular edema and proliferative diabetic retinopathy have improved. The researchers used a large national claims database for their analysis, which highlighted the significance of expanded health insurance access and increased screening in influencing the rising prevalence of disease. They also noted potential benefits from improved diabetes management and earlier detection, which may have led to decreased incidence of sight-threatening complications.
