Researchers for this meta-analysis investigated the potential association between glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) and the risk of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). The study included 69 randomized controlled trials and found a small absolute risk increase in NAION cases for GLP-1 RA users. Though a significant association was unlikely due to the rarity of NAION, concerns remain regarding possible links among NAION, obesity, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnea. The researchers suggested the need for further research on the safety of GLP-1 RAs for obese or diabetic patients with an increased baseline risk of NAION.
