A randomized controlled trial found that consuming 2 oz of pistachios daily significantly increased macular pigment optical density (MPOD) in healthy adults. The study demonstrated that targeted changes in diet, specifically an increase in lutein intake, can raise MPOD. The study also highlighted that pistachios, rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, can elevate serum lutein levels. The researchers concluded that pistachio consumption may offer protection against age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by increasing MPOD as well as serving as a blue light filter. Compliance to increased consumption of pistachios was high and no adverse effects were found.
