A recent meta-analysis found that prenatal cannabis use is linked to a 75% increased risk of low birth weight, even after adjusting for tobacco use. The study, published in JAMA Pediatrics, synthesized data from 51 observational studies to assess risks of low birth weight, preterm birth, small for gestational age, and perinatal mortality. The researchers concluded that prenatal cannabis use was independently associated with increased risks of low birth weight, preterm birth, and small for gestational age with moderate certainty of evidence. They emphasized the importance of reducing prenatal cannabis use for the well-being of pregnant individuals and their offspring.
