Interim results of a randomized trial in the UK suggest that abbreviated magnetic resonance imaging is more effective than ultrasound for detecting early-stage breast cancers in women with dense breast tissue, despite negative mammography results. The study involved 9361 women aged 50 to 70. While supplemental imaging detected additional small and potentially invasive tumors, longer-term data is needed to assess overdiagnosis and inform cost-benefit analyses for population-wide implementation.
