Researchers convened a multidisciplinary expert panel and used a modified Delphi process to develop consensus recommendations for preventing hospital-onset urinary tract infections (HOUTIs), including both catheter-associated UTIs (CAUTIs) and non-catheter-associated UTIs in hospitalized adults. The panel reached strong consensus on 37 recommendations highlighting standardized surveillance, minimized catheter use, aseptic insertion and maintenance practices, culture and antimicrobial stewardship, clinician training, and systematic outcome monitoring to reduce infection burden and guide quality improvement, while highlighting major evidence gaps and research needs for non-CAUTI prevention.
