The Skin Cancer Foundation recently announced that it has launched its annual Destination Healthy Skin mobile education and screening program to boost awareness and detection of skin cancer. Although skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancer types, it is also the most common cancer in the United States. Experts stressed that its incidence is expected to rise in the coming decades, affecting at least 20% of U.S. residents. Through the mobile program—which will begin in Kansas City, Kansas and visit 25 cities in 2024—local volunteer dermatologists will provide free full-body skin exams. Since its inception, the program has performed over 29,000 free skin cancer screenings and detected nearly 12,000 potential skin cancers. The dermatologists will seek to educate the general public about sun-protective behaviors and early skin cancer warning signs, as well as communicate the significance of detecting skin cancer early, when the disease is still curable. “We’re grateful to our volunteer dermatologists, corporate sponsors, and individual donors who help us deliver this very important public service. We look forward to working with our partners to keep this life-saving program on the road for many years to come,” concluded Becky Kamowitz, Interim Executive Director of the Skin Cancer Foundation.
