A recent study found that patients with severe mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) have a significantly elevated risk of developing nonmelanoma skin cancers, with more than double the risk compared to matched controls. The increased risks were observed for squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and nonmelanoma skin cancer, particularly for those with severe MMP receiving systemic immunosuppressive therapy. Early diagnosis and routine skin cancer surveillance are recommended for patients with MMP, especially those with more severe disease.
