Key Comorbidities Elevate Risk of Severe Alopecia Areata

Study finds bronchial asthma, dermatitis, and thyroiditis significantly increase risk for early-onset, severe, and prolonged alopecia areata.

The study reveals that patients with comorbid bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis face significantly increased risks of developing early-onset, severe, and prolonged alopecia areata, a common autoimmune disease characterized by sudden, non-scarring hair loss. Additionally, patients with all three atopic conditions developed alopecia areata nearly 10 years earlier than those without comorbidities. The study was based on data from mainly Central European alopecia areata patients and was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft as part of the German Excellence Strategy. No conflicts of interest were declared by the authors.
