A clinical trial assessed the impact of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and petrolatum on skin barrier function and hydration. Involving 54 participants, the study revealed that both treatments significantly enhanced skin hydration and barrier parameters. EVOO improved epidermal regeneration while petrolatum effectively reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL), demonstrating its occlusive properties. Participants preferred EVOO for its appearance. The study underscores the distinct mechanisms of action for both treatments, warranting further investigation into their long-term effects.
