Vindhya Data Science, a women-owned company in bioinformatics services, has announced the publication of three new research reports exploring the links between dental/oral health services and chronic conditions, including autoimmune diseases, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease.
These conditions—all characterized by systematic inflammation—impact millions of individuals in the United States and worldwide. The research was conducted under contracts with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in Rockville, Maryland, with findings aimed at empowering patients, providers, and payers to make informed health care decisions that could improve outcomes and service quality.
The reports addressed critical knowledge gaps, highlighting the effects of nonsurgical periodontal procedures on outcomes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the influence of dental/oral health services on glycemic control in patients with diabetes, and the benefits of such services for patients with end-stage renal disease. A key finding across the studies showed that nonsurgical periodontal treatments may help lower circulating inflammatory markers in affected patients.
The research was informed by rigorous, rapid literature reviews and input from subject matter experts. “I am proud of our data scientists who incorporated quality metrics, including risk of bias, into extracting data from both primary studies and systematic reviews, enabling determination of the strength of evidence for the various outcomes of interest. Evidence tables have been mapped to key question responses,” emphasized Anupama Reddy, PhD, cofounder and Chief Operating Officer of Vindhya Data Science.
“It is truly rewarding to learn that these findings are influencing policy,” added Nanguneri Nirmala, PhD, cofounder and Chief Executive Officer.
The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has begun amending regulations to include reimbursement for specific dental diagnostics and services linked to Medicare-covered dialysis services. Additionally, CMS is soliciting feedback on potential connections between dental services and covered treatments for diabetes as well as among patients with autoimmune diseases receiving immunosuppressive therapies.
