A retrospective study analyzed data from 4.6 million adults aged 50 years and younger to assess the cardiovascular effects of cannabis use. The study found that cannabis users had a significantly higher risk of myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, major adverse cardiovascular events, heart failure, and all-cause mortality compared with nonusers, even in individuals without traditional cardiovascular risk factors. The findings suggest that cannabis use may be an independent cardiovascular risk factor, potentially linked to endothelial dysfunction, proinflammatory cytokine release, and oxidative stress.
